Home Security FAQs: Answers from EMC Security

If you are considering a home security system, you probably have questions about equipment, monitoring, contracts and cost.
EMC Security has protected homes and businesses across Georgia since 1998. We also serve customers in Upstate South Carolina. Here are our answers to some of the most common questions homeowners ask when choosing a security system.
How much does a home security system cost?
The cost of a home security system depends on the size of your home, the equipment you select and the features you want.
A basic system may include door and window sensors, a motion detector and a touchscreen control panel. You can also add cameras, smart locks, monitored smoke detectors, water sensors and other devices.
We offer several equipment and payment options. An EMC Security representative can help you build a system that fits your home, needs and budget.
How much does professional security monitoring cost?
Monthly monitoring prices vary based on the services included.
When comparing security companies, look beyond the advertised starting price. Ask whether the rate requires a long-term agreement, how long the price is guaranteed and whether additional service fees apply.
EMC Security offers affordable professional monitoring with no long-term contract required.
Can I get a home security system without a long-term contract?
Yes. EMC Security offers professional monitoring without requiring a long-term contract.
Customers can purchase their equipment upfront or explore available financing options. We will explain the equipment cost, monitoring rate and payment options before you make a decision.
Is professional security monitoring worth it?
Professional monitoring provides around-the-clock support when an alarm is activated.
If your system detects a possible break-in, fire, carbon monoxide emergency or another monitored event, trained monitoring professionals can review the signal and follow the appropriate response procedures.
This protection continues when you are asleep, away from home or unable to respond to an alert on your phone.
What is the difference between self-monitoring and professional monitoring?
A self-monitored system sends alerts directly to the homeowner. The homeowner must check the alert and contact emergency services if help is needed.
A professionally monitored system also sends alarm signals to a monitoring center staffed by trained operators. You can still receive notifications and control your system from your phone, but you are not solely responsible for responding to an emergency.
Is professional installation better than a DIY security system?
The best option depends on your home and the level of protection you need.
DIY systems may work for homeowners who want a simple setup and are comfortable installing and maintaining the equipment. Professional installation provides proper device placement, system testing and personalized assistance from a trained technician.
Professional installation can be especially helpful when a system includes multiple sensors, cameras, monitored smoke detectors and connected-home features.
Can EMC Security monitor my existing security system?
In many cases, we can use some or all of your existing security equipment.
Compatibility depends on the equipment’s manufacturer, age and current configuration. An EMC Security representative can review your system and determine whether it can be reactivated or whether any components need to be updated.
Will my security system work if the power goes out?
Many professionally installed security systems include a backup battery that keeps essential components operating temporarily during a power outage.
Systems with cellular communication may also continue sending alarm signals when internet service is unavailable. Backup capabilities vary by system, so we will explain what to expect from the equipment installed in your home.
Does a home security system require Wi-Fi?
Basic alarm monitoring does not always require Wi-Fi.
Many professionally monitored systems use a cellular connection to communicate with the monitoring center. Wi-Fi may still be required for features such as live camera viewing, recorded video and certain smart-home devices.
Can I control my security system from my phone?
Yes. EMC Security offers systems that can be controlled through a mobile app.
Depending on your equipment and service plan, you may be able to:
- Arm or disarm your system
- Receive security alerts
- View live camera footage
- Review recorded video
- Lock or unlock connected doors
- Control connected lights and thermostats
- Check your system’s status
What is video verification?
Video verification allows our monitoring team to review video associated with an alarm event when compatible cameras and services are installed.
The video can provide more information about what caused the alarm and help distinguish suspicious activity from animals, weather or other harmless movement. It may also provide emergency responders with useful details about what is happening at the property.
What is AI Deterrence?
EMC Security’s AI Deterrence uses intelligent camera technology to identify people or vehicles entering a designated area.
When someone enters the protected area, the system can activate lights and audible warnings. This draws attention to the camera and may discourage suspicious activity before it escalates into theft, vandalism or a break-in.
Where should outdoor security cameras be installed?
Outdoor cameras are commonly installed near:
- Front and back doors
- Driveways
- Garages
- Side entrances
- Gates
- Other frequently used access points
Camera placement is important. Each camera should have a clear view without being blocked by landscaping, decorations or harsh lighting. Our professional installers can recommend locations that provide useful coverage while reducing blind spots.
Do security cameras work at night?
Many security cameras include infrared night vision, low-light technology or built-in lighting.
Image quality depends on the camera, its placement and the amount of available light. Floodlight cameras can provide additional visibility while drawing attention to movement around the property.
Can smoke and carbon monoxide detectors be professionally monitored?
Yes. Compatible smoke and carbon monoxide detectors can be connected to your professionally monitored security system.
When a monitored detector activates, our monitoring center receives a signal and can begin the appropriate response process. This provides added protection when you are away from home, asleep or unable to respond.
Can a security system detect water leaks?
Water sensors can be added to many security systems to help detect leaks.
These sensors are often installed near water heaters, washing machines, sinks, toilets and other areas where leaks may occur. Receiving an early alert may give you time to respond before the water causes more extensive damage.
Can a security system lower my homeowners insurance?
Some insurance companies offer discounts for professionally monitored security systems, smoke detectors and other protective devices.
Discounts and requirements vary. Contact your insurance provider to ask whether your system qualifies and what documentation is needed.
What should I look for when choosing a security company?
Do not base your decision only on an advertised equipment price. Ask each company about:
- Monthly monitoring rates
- Contract requirements
- Equipment ownership
- Installation and service
- Cancellation policies
- Camera recording and storage
- Mobile app access
- Monitoring center operations
- Fire and environmental protection
- Local customer support
Choose a company that clearly explains its pricing, services and policies before asking you to make a decision.
Why choose a local security company?
A local security company understands the communities it serves and can provide knowledgeable, personalized service.
EMC Security is owned by three electric cooperatives and has protected local homes and businesses since 1998. Our customers receive advanced protection, professional monitoring and local service without being required to sign a long-term contract.
