Movie companies have flirted with this idea for a long time but, it looks like in April, they will see if customers will go for it. The idea being, if offered, will customers pay a premium price to watch first run (meaning movies that are still in theaters) in the privacy of their own homes. Right now the average length of time you have to wait is about 4 to 6 months after a movie is on the screens of theaters before a DVD/Blu-Ray/VOD is available. (Some sooner so the movie companies can cash in on hype.)
Warner Bros., Sony, Fox and Universal announced plans to offer premium VOD (Video On Demand) starting in April. The plan is to offer movies for a Pay-Per-View price of $30 just two months after they hit theater screens. So, at the launch, movies like “Paul”, “Just Go With It” and “The Adjustment Bureau “would be available for pay per view rate of $30 from DirecTV, Vudu, Comcast Cable…maybe even NetFlix.

Premium VOD is coming to your Home in April.
The question is would you be willing to pay a larger rental fee if you could watch the “Big Blockbuster” that everyone is talking about on your flat-panel TV in your bedroom instead of paying $20 for a theater ticket, gas to get there and pay theater prices for popcorn, soda & candy….or finally get to see a current movie without having to fight to find a baby sitter? Thirty bucks doesn’t sound that bad now, does it?
Well, my personal opinion is a solid “maybe”. I personally don’t have a super problem waiting a few months to see a movie at home. However, I could realistically see myself dropping $30 to see a movie I really wanted to see in my home. It really comes down to movie companies making it a product that consumers can’t wait for.
Actually, I miss going to the local theater and getting that “movie theater” experience. But, with the great advances and palatable prices for home theater systems…you can have that experience at home and make your own popcorn.
We will get a chance to see if “Premium Video-On-Demand” works starting at the end of April when DirecTV begins offering it to subscribers and Comcast shortly after.
If you are considering building, adding to or upgrading your home theater system, You should do it now and be ready so you can turn that extra room into a private screening room.
